The session of lent in the liturgical calendar begins on Ash Wednesday. The 40 days of Lent marks the memory of Jesus spending days in the desert where he spent in fasting and in prayer before beginning his public ministry. Hence Ash Wednesday is an important day.
This year Ash Wednesday was observed on the 2nd of March. The devotees gathered in large numbers at 6:30 am and at 5:15 pm to begin lent by sprinkling ashes on their heads as the sign of repentance and penance.
